Gill Vickery
Gill Vickery was born in Derby. Family legend claims she is descended from Lord Byron’s disreputable clan which might explain the rebellious streak that saw her excluded from school at thirteen. Fortunately, she had already won a place at Art School where she spent four happy years painting, drawing, sculpting and writing. She went on to study Fine Art-Painting in Cardiff then English at Sussex University. In between she worked in factories - including a pill factory, a chocolate packing factory and a jam factory – and as a nursing assistant.
Later she studied for an MA in Library Studies and took a module in children’s literature to fill a gap in her timetable. It was the best part of the course and inspired her to write children’s books. She worked as a Children’s Specialist Librarian and then a teacher.
Now she writes children’s books and teaches at the Percival Guildhouse Adult Education centre in Rugby. Gill’s book, The Ivy Crown, won the Fidler First Novel competition. She has just completed the sixth book in her DragonChild sequence.
