Exercise in writing about doing one thing whilst talking about another.
Aaah! The best moment in the day; no, not the day, the week.
The dog’s been walked, the doors are locked and if it were later in the year the fire would be banked up. Just now it’s September, and a warm one at that, so the cool sheets are refreshing rather than chilly.
On the duvet, smoothed out, is the Sunday review, neatly folded at the cryptic crossword. Its margins, still unsullied by any graffiti, have an air of virtue, of temptation resisted for the whole day
Now, 1 across: Happy and tender voyager. 9 letters. Mmm.
“What did you think of it then?” Propped in bed, book in hand, she didn’t turn her head. The question headed straight for the wall opposite.
“What?” His hearing aid was on the bedside table.
“Her family aren’t going to like it when they find out.”
His deafness wasn’t quite sufficient to obscure her louder voice when the enquiry was repeated and he agreed, the divorce wouldn’t be well received. Perhaps if he could get 1 down: Fortunate to be worn nightly in an affirmative Teutonic text. 7 letters.
“Then there’s the nationality thing.”
“You mean, him becoming German. Ye…s.” German for yes is ‘ja’ and text could be manuscript abbreviated to ms.
“They’ll be lucky to get away with it.”
Why doesn’t she get on with her book? No hang on “You’ve got something there. Lucky helps, and… Jim’s part of the answer.”
“What are you talking about?”
“My crossword clue. Thanks for the suggestion. 1down is jimjams. You see ja and ms makes jams and lucky gets me to jim…”
“Oh that sort of thing is beyond me. I like the speedy one. Did you see the trailer? They’re doing another adaptation of that book about three jolly young men and a dog holidaying on a river?”
“Oh that; I wasn’t really watching.”
“You slept through it, you mean. What was it called? I can remember who wrote the book, it’s the sort of name you just don’t forget.”
“Dunno.”
There was a period of silence. 1 across: Happy and tender voyager. It’s got to start with a j now.
“That’s it, ‘Three men in a Boat’” she said. “Are you listening to me?”
Got it. 1 Across, Jollyboat.
“Sorry. What did you say?”
